Michael Aronin

Rising Above

Michael Aronin knows two things: he’s got a killer sense of humor and
he has cerebral palsy. But Michael growing up never let his disability
get him down - in fact it hardly even phased him. While an undergraduate at Towson State University he was elected President of the Student Government Association and has gone on to be one of the hardest working comics in the country. In May of 2004 he won the prestigious Norman G. Brooks Comedy Competition. (The Norman G. Brooks Competition is held annually in Los Angeles and is a national competition featuring comedians with a disability.)

Today Michael spends much of his time lending that considerable wit,
and a dose of wisdom to counseling, and to his motivational speaking
program. Michael feels that his presentations benefit both those who
are disabled and those who are not. He speaks about what it was like
growing up disabled in an able-bodied world, of the importance of
believe in ourselves, of building and maintaining a support system, and of the crucial role humor and attitude can play in our lives.

Michael offers humor as a way to break down barriers and prove that
someone who is disabled can have the same outlook on life as one who is not. Because disabled or not, we can be out own best friend or our own worst enemy. He believes that we all face challenges in one way or another. You will see in his program that it is not the disability
stopping you from achieving, but your attitude towards your own
situation.

It has been said by many in his audiences that he understands people. His presentations use a combination of leadership skills and a gentle nudging to help his audiences bring out the best in themselves. He spends everyday in a mirthful battle with modern conveniences to other’s prejudices and through it all, has the ability to see humor and potential in our own frustrations.

My audience was just used to regular comedians. Michael made them laugh and he made them aware.
